A man believed to have robbed an Intel store Tuesday on Long Island led cops on a wild chase, then stopped at an intersection and opened fire on police, authorities said at a press conference.
The gunfire erupted hours earlier on Harrison Street in Uniondale, where the suspect, whose name has not been released, stopped his black Dodge Charger and fired shots at officers as they approached him, officials said.
They had been tailing him for a brief period of time after recognizing his vehicle in connection with the Intel robbery. The chase began once the suspect realized it.
Chopper 4 was over the scene on Harrison Street, where a bullet-riddled sedan was seen stalled in an intersection, its driver’s side door ajar. Multiple police vehicles were surrounding it.
He ran off after firing his gun at the officers, who weren’t hit and chased him down a side street. Cops say the suspect tried to shoot again — twice — but his gun didn’t fire.
He then pointed the weapon at his own head and threatened suicide before the officers were able to convince him to surrender. No one was hit by gunfire. The suspect suffered some sort of back injury.
Streets were closed in the area for a time but later reopened.
Authorities say their investigation is ongoing.
