]]>Yaphank-based American Organic Energy will hold a groundbreaking for its anaerobic digester facility on April 20 at 11 a.m.
At this facility, Long Island’s food waste will be collected, separated, pre-processed, broken down, and ultimately transformed into convertible energy, vehicle fuel, fertilizer, and nutrient-rich water.
“This project is a culmination of years of collaborative efforts on the part of the local community, environmental advocates, government officials, and private industry,” Charles Vigliotti, the company’s CEO, said in a statement. “It represents the best of what public/private cooperation looks like and will put Long Island center stage in designing a sustainable future.”
Vigliotti has long worked in Long Island’s green economy, having also co-founded Long Island Compost. AOE has partnered with energy and engineering firms with the aim to “significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions by reducing both the number of diesel transport vehicles and the volume of organic waste currently disposed of in landfills,” according to a press release about the groundbreaking.
When it is fully operating, the facility is expected to reduce carbon emissions by 40,000 tons annually, produce 2.0 MW of electricity and approximately 1.9 million diesel gallons equivalent of compressed natural gas,” according to the press release.
The new facility would “change the way we manage food waste on Long Island,” Adrienne Esposito, executive director of Citizens Campaign for the Environment, said in a statement.
She said that New York “generates more than 4 million tons of food waste” each year. And transforming food scraps into “a resource and not a waste product is good for the environment and our wallets.”
And, she pointed out, with the Brookhaven Landfill expected to close in two years, “there is no plan for waste disposal on Long Island after 2024,” she said.
AOE aims to accept about 180,000 tons of food waste per year, sparing the need for transporting that waste, which would be dumped into distant landfills.
“This project will reduce waste going to landfills, reduce trucking waste off Long Island, and demonstrates that organics are a valuable, recyclable product,” Esposito said.
According to Vigliotti, the facility has received long-standing support from the town, county, and state officials.

]]>PBS program “Antiques Roadshow” started its 26th season off with a Connecticut classic: Middletown’s Wadsworth Mansion at Long Hill Estate.
The mansion played host for the first three episodes of the season as people from around the area brought their treasures on-site to be examined by professional appraisers.
The Wadsworth episodes include an “Antiques Roadshow” first, according to a news release. The team appraised its first antique car, with longtime Connecticut resident Paul Newman’s autograph on the dashboard.
Other items in the premiere episode include a 1915-1916 Boston Red Sox baseball calendar featuring Babe Ruth, an Easter Island Tahonga, and letters written by Mahatma Gandhi.
The first episode premiered on Jan. 3 after filming in Middletown in August of last year. The subsequent two episodes will air on Jan. 10 and 17.
The Colonial revival-style mansion is on the National Register of Historic Places and was built in 1900, according to its website. The grounds feature extensive parklands with walking trails and are adjacent to Wadsworth Falls State Park.
An episode of PBS Antique Roadshow will be filming at Wadsworth Mansion, 421 Wadsworth St., Middletown, on Aug. 10.
The show followed all COVID-19 protocols during filming, according to the previous reporting, and only invited guests, appraisers, and the production team was allowed access to the estate at that time.
This season’s filming locations also included Hempstead House at Sands Point Preserve in Sands Point, N.Y., Omni Mount Washington Resort in Bretton Woods, N.H., and Grounds For Sculpture in Hamilton, N.J., and Colonial Williamsburg in Williamsburg, Va.
“Antiques Roadshow” season one premiered in 1997 and is produced by WGBH in Boston.
The season 26 premiere is available to watch online at PBS.org or on YouTube.

]]>UNIONDALE, NY — The family of high school basketball star Jomani “Jo-Jo” Wright, who was killed in a car crash in Uniondale in January, have filed a $150 million lawsuit against the Town of Hempstead and others, alleging that the road where the accident occurred was not maintained because it was in a minority neighborhood.
Lawyers for the family — including civil rights attorney Benjamin Crump — said that the town knew the intersection was dangerous but allowed it to remain without a stop sign or traffic lights, according to Newsday.
Wright’s family announced in May that it was planning to file a wrongful death lawsuit against the town for the accident, which occurred on the afternoon of Jan. 27 as Wright and three others were heading to basketball practice. The three other teens received non-life-threatening injuries in the crash.
The intersection, at Maple Avenue and Front Street, now has a stop sign but did not at the time of the crash.
“You are witnessing the lack of infrastructure in our communities,” Heather Palmore, the family’s attorney, told News 12.
The Town of Hempstead did not comment on the lawsuit. But in May, when the prospect of the suit was first announced, a town spokesman said that the claim that racial bias played a role in how the town maintains roads was “without merit.”
Wright was a 15-year-old sophomore at Uniondale High School when he died. A point guard, he racked up numerous accolades as a freshman for the Knights. He was one of only two freshmen in New York to be named all-state in 2020.

The Hempstead Town Board on Tuesday approved $770,700 in new hires, raises, promotions, and new time-off benefits for union workers, in a meeting that was closed to the public amid the coronavirus pandemic.
The board voted 7-0 without discussion for the 30 staffing moves and the time-off deal in front of a largely empty auditorium and an audience watching via online Livestream in a meeting that lasted just over 10 minutes.
The new personnel spending comes as other Long Island local governments brace for possible budget shortfalls caused by the outbreak.
Hempstead Supervisor Don Clavin declined to answer questions after the meeting, issuing a statement instead that said staffing measures such as those approved Tuesday are common.
“The overriding consideration in the presentation of personnel resolutions is the priority of providing the best governmental services in a cost-effective manner,” the statement read. “Indeed, today’s personnel actions received bipartisan support in furtherance of this goal,” the statement continued, referring to Senior Councilwoman Dorothy Goosby, the lone Democrat on the board. Goosby, who is recovering from the coronavirus, called into the meeting by phone.
The staffing moves consisted of:
Hempstead spokesman Greg Blower said the new spending will be offset by savings from a retirement incentive package the town is offering employees. He said 42 workers have already accepted it.
“We fully expect that our budget will continue to be in line with projections,” he said.
The union agreement, one of two passed at the meeting, grants extra time off to unionized town employees working through the coronavirus outbreak. Among its provisions: full-time employees deemed essential will receive up to 64 extra hours off for coming into work between March 17 and April 17.
Theresa Kohutka, president of Hempstead’s union local, said she was satisfied with the agreement, which she said compensates town employees for the risks they face coming to work during the public health crisis. In particular, she praised a provision offering essential part-time employees one hour off for every two hours worked in the first two and a half weeks of April.
“They’re still risking their health, so I thought they deserved some compensation,” she said. “We want to show the appreciation that they are coming in every day and doing their job.”
The union and staffing moves could have implications for Hempstead’s budget at a time when local governments leaders are projecting possible revenue shortfalls. Mortgage recording taxes and fees for commercial garbage, building permits, and recreation all could wane as the outbreak stunts economic activity.
